The Hotel Gotham Manchester is a 5-star hotel located a short distance from the heart of Manchester on King Street.
With 55 bedrooms and an additional five suites, the hotel is part of the Gotham Group, and we were looking forward to our visit as we have heard good things about the hotel.
Our old bank – Hotel Website
Gotham is located at 100 King Street in the central conservation area and is housed in one of the city’s grandest, listed buildings – a former premises of Midland Bank. Standing at the head of King Street, proudly atop the hill amidst architectural nods to the Grecian and Baroque, Hotel Gotham draws inspiration from these surroundings and rises up as an imposing castle of stone and steel. Designed by Edwin Lutyens in 1928 in the Art Deco style of the time, is it any wonder it was referred to as ‘The King’? In terms of the architecture, the neoclassical design is unusual for Manchester. But we quite like that. We celebrate difference at Gotham.
How much did the room cost?
Nothing! We used the 40,300 Etihad Guest Points, which expired at the end of January 2022.
However, the room only rate on the Hotel Gotham Website was £179.00 on a room only basis with free cancellation up until noon on the day of arrival.
Check-in
We arrived at the hotel at about 12.30 pm and parked the car outside as we booked valet parking for £35.00 during our one night stay.
Due to the layout of the building, reception is on level 6, with all the rooms and suites on levels 1-5.
However, valet parking was on the ground level, and a staff member confirmed the booking, took the keys and stored our overnight bag while we went out shopping and drinking in Manchester.
The Club Bedroom
We booked the standard club bedroom, which for a 5-star hotel felt particularly small at 26 square metres.
We were not sure if the bed was king-size as it felt more like a double, but otherwise, it was comfortable, although the pillows were a little on the soft side.
What else did the room offer?
- Egyptian cotton bed linen
- waffle robes
- minibar
- espresso machine
- flatscreen TV
- chair
- free WiFi
Sadly the bathroom did not have a bath! From looking at the website, only the suites have a bath in the room. Therefore if you love a bath, you will have to pay a hefty price for a suite.
Food & Drink
When staying for one night, we rarely ate at a hotel, and it was the same on our visit to the Hotel Gotham.
We had booked into El Gato Negro on King Street, just a five-minute walk from the hotel, and we would highly recommend a visit.
Located on level 6, The Honey Restaurant was open for the following hours:
Breakfast – Monday to Friday 7 am – 10 am, Saturday and Sunday 8 am – 11 am
Lunch – Monday to Sunday 12:30pm – 2.30pm
Afternoon Tea – Monday to Sunday 12:30 pm – 4 pm for the last sitting
Dinner – Monday to Sunday 7pm -10pm
You can make reservations directly at the hotel or online. The prices seemed reasonable for a 5-star hotel when looking at the menu.
Club Brass, a VIP lounge for guests and members, was located on level 7 of the hotel.
Club Brass – Hotel Website
Open to members and Gotham guests only, Club Brass is a VIP lounge on the 7th floor. You’ll pass through two vault-like doors on your way into a Prohibition-style speakeasy that will make you feel like a million bucks. There is a tempting bar menu and cocktails such as The King of King Street, Bellboy Barry’s Bramble and Lady Crumpsall’s Champagne Cocktail.
We had a couple of drinks in the lounge, and you were paying 5-star prices, but the bars around the hotel were a similar price.
There were no drinks on draught, which is always the first sign that it wouldn’t be cheap.
Again we have no problem paying the going rate, but the lounge did lack atmosphere. Our advice would be to have a drink in the lounge before going out or one for the road on your return to the hotel.
Breakfast
We opted to have a full English breakfast in the room, but the only problem was the lack of a table and chairs for two people to eat.
Staff and Service
The staff at the hotel were helpful, and we were given excellent service from start to finish.
The only negative point would be that the service in the VIP lounge was a little slow.
Tips
- Book the valet car service. It may seem expensive at £35.00, but it gives you peace of mind, and you can pay up to £30.00 for 24 hours at the nearby car parks.
- If you like a bath to relax, you will need to book a suite.
