Hotel Review: Club King Room at the Crowne Plaza Glasgow

Approximately 1.5 miles from the city centre The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow is located near BBC Scotland, Exhibition Station, the Glasgow Science Centre and Glasgow Riverside Museum.

In this report, I will only be reviewing the hotel room, club lounge, breakfast options and service provided by the hotel. Unfortunately, I  didn’t eat in any of the restaurants or use the fitness centre or spa.

Check-in

Check-in was quick and efficient. Not much more to say apart from the receptionist explained that if you wanted to purchase breakfast, it would cost £12.95 per person.

As we were all staying in Club Rooms, we decided that we would have a light breakfast in the lounge.

The Room

Although the room is designated a King Bed Club Room, it is the same size as a Standard King Room in the hotel.

However, you do get additional benefits including Sky TV (including Sports Channels), slippers, robes, toiletries and a stocked mini bar (water was the only drink available!!) which is chargeable.

The room was clean, the bed comfortable with a table and chair which my wife used as her dressing table.

Air Conditioning

There was a problem with the air conditioning as it smelled, didn’t keep the room cool and rattled.

Therefore, the first night’s sleep in the hotel wasn’t great due to the smell of the air conditioning and the noise it was making. Finally, at 4.00am I decided to turn it off, and the room became unbearably warm.

Before going out for the day, my wife spoke to reception and asked if someone could take a look at the air conditioning system in the room.

When we returned to the hotel and asked about the maintenance issue, it hadn’t been attended to or even logged onto the system.

It was clear the air conditioning couldn’t be fixed, and the hotel offered another room on the same floor.

However, in the new room, the air conditioning unit rattled just like the previous room’s, which lead to another poor nights sleep.

Bathroom

The bathroom was clean with ample space, with a bath and shower combination.

The Bee Kind amenities from Gilchrist & Soames were the usual shampoo, conditioner and shower wash you find in most 4/5 star hotels. However, the bottles were paper and not plastic therefore environmentally friendly.

Breakfast

As mentioned earlier in my review the Club King Room was purchased on a room only basis due to there being a breakfast option in the Club Lounge.

The previous day had involved a fair amount of drinking on the Virgin Train from Preston to Glasgow as we were celebrating my brother-in-laws birthday weekend. Unfortunately, the drinking and eating carried on for most of the day and early evening.

Therefore, I was feeling ravenous on Saturday morning. However, when I got to the Club Lounge, it was full, and there was not much food available just some stale looking bread.

Taking an executive decision, I decided to treat myself and my wife to a full English Breakfast in the hotel restaurant on the ground floor.

Thinking the breakfast was going to be charged at £12.95 and not £15.95 paid, it was still worth the money, and there was plenty of options available.

Unfortunately, on Sunday morning, the breakfast was no better in the Club Lounge, but this time I managed to grab some form of meat, cheese and stale bread. There were no mugs available for a coffee, so I had to have it in a paper take-out cup.

Club Lounge

Open from 8.00am to 8.00pm the Club Lounge was small and had seating for approximately 30 people.

Hot and cold soft drinks were available throughout the day and a selection of alcoholic beverages for two hours in the evening.

Unfortunately, the food and alcoholic drinks on offer in the evening were limited. There were no spirits, a small wine selection, and the only beer on offer was Becks.

On the first night (Friday) the Club Lounge was busy but not full and as a group of four found seats and a table on entering. However, on a Saturday night, it is an entirely different story.

Mayhem, for the two-hour food and alcoholic drink service. The room got packed and a little uncomfortable. Other guest decided that it was an excellent opportunity to raid the fridges to take food and drink back to their room, which resulted in the wine and beer fridges emptying very quickly.

To make matters worse, there was only one member of staff looking after the lounge, and at one point in the evening, there were more than forty people in the room.
