Fullers360 Ferry to Waiheke Island
The Fullers360 Ferry to Waiheke Island is a simple, scenic and enjoyable way to travel from central Auckland to one of New Zealand’s most popular island escapes. We used the ferry for our trip to Waiheke Island, and it immediately felt like part of the day rather than just a way of getting from A to B.

Boarding at Auckland
Boarding was straightforward, and the ferry terminal area was easy enough to navigate. Our photos show the Fullers360 vessel waiting alongside the pier in Auckland, with the city skyline, harbour buildings and cruise ships nearby. This gave the journey a real sense of occasion, especially as you leave directly from the heart of Auckland.
The ferry itself looked modern and practical rather than luxurious, but that suited the nature of the trip. It is a commuter and visitor ferry, so the focus is clearly on efficient transport, regular sailings and getting passengers across the Hauraki Gulf safely and comfortably.
Seating and Comfort Onboard
Inside, the ferry had rows of blue seats in a bright cabin with large windows. The interior felt clean, functional and well arranged. It was not a premium travel experience, but it was perfectly comfortable for a short crossing.

There was a choice between sitting indoors or heading outside to enjoy the open-air deck. On a clear day, the outside seating is easily the best option. The upper deck gave us lovely views back towards Auckland, including the city buildings and Sky Tower, while the harbour opened up around us.
The outside benches were basic metal seating, so they were not especially comfortable for a long period, but for a 40-minute journey, they worked well. We preferred being outside because the views made the crossing much more memorable.
Views Across the Hauraki Gulf
The best part of the Fullers360 Ferry to Waiheke Island was the scenery. Leaving Auckland by water gives you a completely different view of the city, and the journey quickly becomes more relaxed as the skyline starts to fade behind you.

The water was a beautiful turquoise colour in places, and the approach towards Waiheke Island was especially attractive. Our photos show calm water, a green coastline, small bays, and moored boats as the ferry approached the island. This made the crossing feel like the start of a proper island escape.
For anyone visiting Auckland, this short ferry ride is one of the easiest ways to enjoy the Hauraki Gulf without needing a full boat tour.
Onboard Café and Facilities
The ferry also had a small onboard café and snack counter. It offered drinks and light refreshments, which is useful if you have boarded quickly or want something during the crossing. We enjoyed a drink on board while sitting outside, which added to the trip’s relaxed feel.

The café area was simple, but it was a nice extra feature for a short passenger ferry. It also makes the ferry more convenient if you are travelling with children or have a longer wait before lunch or a vineyard booking on Waiheke.
Timetable and Fares
The Fullers360 Ferry to Waiheke Island offers regular sailings across the day, with the timetable showing departures from early morning through to late evening on many days. This makes the route flexible for both day trips and overnight stays. It is still worth checking the latest timetable before travelling, as sailing times, pier details and service alerts can change.
At the time checked, Fullers360 listed the standard Auckland City to Waiheke Island adult walk-up return fare at NZ$62, an adult one-way fare at NZ$31, and an off-peak adult return fare at NZ$46, subject to the stated off-peak travel conditions. The Waiheke Reserve return ticket was listed at NZ$99, allowing passengers to pre-book a travel date and departure time. A family return ticket was listed at NZ$132, covering two adults and two children aged 5–15.
Using the March 2025 average exchange rate of approximately 1 NZD = £0.4435, the fares converted to the following approximate sterling amounts:
| Adult one-way | NZ$31 | £13.75 |
| Adult return | NZ$62 | £27.50 |
| Off-peak adult return | NZ$46 | £20.40 |
| Waiheke Reserve return | NZ$99 | £43.91 |
| Family return | NZ$132 | £58.54 |
For us, this felt like fair value because the ferry was not just transport. The crossing also gave us a scenic harbour journey, open-air views, and a relaxed start to our Waiheke Island visit.
Arrival on Waiheke Island
Arriving in Waiheke felt very different from Auckland. The harbour was calmer, the coastline looked greener, and the pace immediately seemed slower. Matiatia Wharf is the main arrival point, and from there you can continue by bus, taxi, transfer or organised tour.
If you are planning lunch or a wine tasting, it is worth arranging your onward transport before you arrive. Waiheke is bigger than some visitors may expect, and restaurants and vineyards are spread across the island.
What We Liked
The Fullers360 Ferry to Waiheke Island worked well because it was easy, scenic and convenient. The journey time was short enough for a day trip but long enough to enjoy the views. We liked the option of sitting outside, the relaxed harbour scenery, and the ability to buy a drink on board.

The ferry also gave our Waiheke visit a better sense of arrival. Instead of simply driving somewhere, the crossing made the island feel like a destination.
What Could Be Better
The seating outside was fairly basic, and the ferry is more practical than stylish. During peak periods, we can imagine the service feeling much busier, especially with day-trippers, tour groups and commuters all using the same route.
The main point to watch is the timetable. Because service alerts and pier changes can happen, we would always check the Fullers360 website before leaving for the terminal.
Fullers360 Ferry to Waiheke Island: Final Verdict
The Fullers360 Ferry to Waiheke Island is a great way to travel from Auckland. It is convenient, scenic and easy to use, with enough onboard comfort for the short crossing. The outside deck views are the highlight, especially when leaving Auckland and approaching Waiheke’s coastline.
This is not a luxury ferry experience, but it does not need to be. It does exactly what visitors need it to do and adds a lovely scenic element to the day.
Verdict: A relaxed, convenient and scenic ferry crossing that makes Waiheke Island feel like a proper Auckland escape.
