13 minutes

Overall Rating: ★★☆☆☆
Expectation Level: Did not meet our expectations
Best For: Harbour views, The Rocks location, Circular Quay access, and travellers who value iconic Sydney views
Not Ideal For: Guests expecting a calm premium lounge, a special room experience, or the same standard as a previous luxury stay

Our Shangri-La Sydney Return Visit Review covers our March 2025 stay, when we returned for a short one-night stop before flying to Singapore. We first stayed at Shangri-La Sydney in 2019 and had a wonderful experience, so choosing the hotel again felt like an easy decision.

Sadly, our return visit did not match those memories. The hotel still has a fantastic location and some of the best views in Sydney, but the overall stay felt disappointing compared with our previous visit.

We wanted a relaxing luxury stopover before continuing our journey. After a long trip, a familiar hotel felt like the safest choice. We expected comfort, good service and a premium lounge experience.

Instead, our Shangri-La Sydney Return Visit Review reflects a stay that fell short, mainly because the Horizon Club Lounge felt overcrowded and lacked the calm luxury feel we expected.

A return visit can sometimes be difficult because memories from a previous stay set a high standard. Our 2019 stay felt special, so we arrived with positive expectations. Unfortunately, the March 2025 stay reminded us that a hotel experience can change over time.

Location

The location remains one of the strongest reasons to stay at Shangri-La Sydney. The hotel sits in The Rocks, close to Sydney Harbour, Circular Quay and many of the city’s main attractions.

For a short stopover, the location works well. We could easily enjoy the harbour area, walk to Circular Quay, and take in the classic Sydney views without having to travel far. The Rocks also gives the stay a strong sense of place, with historic streets, restaurants, bars and harbour walks nearby.

The hotel suits travellers who want to see Sydney’s most famous sights without spending too much time in taxis. Sydney Opera House, Circular Quay and the Harbour Bridge area all feel within easy reach.

However, guests should know that the walk back from the harbour can feel quite steep. The elevated position helps create the views, but it may not suit everyone after a long day exploring. Guests with mobility concerns may prefer to use taxis or rideshares when returning to the hotel.

For our Shangri-La Sydney Return Visit Review, the location remained a major positive. The hotel still works well for sightseeing, harbour access and short Sydney stopovers.

Check-in Experience

Check-in did not give us the smooth start we expected from a luxury hotel. When we arrived, the process felt slow, with several people waiting ahead of us.

As Horizon Club guests, we expected the option to check in at the lounge, or at least to be offered that option. Unfortunately, nobody mentioned lounge check-in, so we had to wait in the main reception area instead. For a premium stay, especially during a short one-night visit, that felt disappointing.

A slow check-in can set the wrong tone, particularly when returning to a hotel after an excellent previous stay. In our Shangri-La Sydney Return Visit Review, the arrival experience reinforced the sense that the hotel did not meet the standard we remembered from 2019.

Check-out worked much better. We checked out from the Horizon Club Lounge before heading to Sydney Airport and the Qantas First Class Lounge. That part of the stay felt easier and more in line with the premium service we expected.

Horizon Club Opera House City Room

For this stay, we booked a Horizon Club Opera House City Room. Shangri-La describes the room as offering views of the Sydney skyline and Circular Quay, with partial views of the Sydney Opera House, from levels 30 to 35. The room also includes Horizon Club benefits and privileges, which formed a big part of our expectations.

The room measures around 40 sqm, which should feel comfortable for a city hotel stay. Room features include signature bed linens, a pillow menu, a separate shower and bath, premium Shangri-La toiletries, high-speed Wi-Fi, an LCD flat-screen television, Foxtel, a full-size executive writing desk, an electronic safe, tea and coffee-making facilities and a mini-bar.

Our room felt clean and comfortable, which we appreciated during a short one-night stay before flying to Singapore. The bed gave us a good night’s sleep, and the room worked well enough as a practical stopover.

However, the room did not give us the same wow factor that we remembered from our 2019 stay. Although the Horizon Club Opera House City Room has strong features on paper, the overall feel seemed fairly standard during our visit.

The view remained a positive part of the stay, with the Sydney skyline, Circular Quay, and a partial view of the Opera House giving the room a sense of place. However, the room itself did not feel especially memorable or luxurious.

For a hotel with such a strong reputation and an iconic Sydney setting, we expected the Horizon Club Opera House City Room to feel more special. In our Shangri-La Sydney Return Visit Review, the room did its job, but it did not create the luxury return experience we had hoped for.

Bathroom

The bathroom in our Horizon Club Opera House City Room felt spacious and well-equipped. It included a separate bath, which added a traditional luxury hotel feel and gave the room a more premium touch.

The marble-style finish looked smart, although the overall design felt more classic than modern. The bath area offered plenty of space, and the towels were neatly presented.

We also found a good selection of bathroom amenities, including toothbrushes, a comb, a razor and grooming items. The toiletries included Eloura Australia body lotion, which added a nicer branded touch.

In our Shangri-La Sydney Return Visit Review, the bathroom was clean, practical and comfortable. Even so, the overall style felt a little dated compared with what we expected from a premium Shangri-La stay.

Views

The views remain the standout feature of Shangri-La Sydney. From the lounge, the outlook over Sydney Harbour and the Opera House looked spectacular.

Review From The Horizon Club Lounge
Review From The Horizon Club Lounge

Sydney has many great hotels, but few can match the impact of those harbour views. The view still gives the hotel a sense of occasion, and it remains one of the main reasons people book a stay here.

For us, the view became the highlight of the stay. It reminded us why we loved the hotel on our first visit, even though the rest of the experience fell short this time.

A great view can lift a hotel stay, and Shangri-La Sydney still delivers on that point. Looking out across the harbour gives guests the classic Sydney experience. The Opera House, harbour water and city skyline create a memorable backdrop.

However, views alone cannot carry a full luxury stay. A hotel still needs to deliver a calm atmosphere, strong service and a room that matches the premium setting. During our March 2025 visit, the view impressed us, but other parts of the stay did not reach the same standard.

The views remain one of the strongest points in our Shangri-La Sydney Return Visit Review.

Horizon Club Lounge

The Horizon Club Lounge should have been one of the main highlights of our stay. As Horizon Club guests, we expected a calm, relaxed and premium lounge experience, especially during breakfast and evening drinks.

Horizon Club Lounge
Horizon Club Lounge

The views from the lounge remained excellent. Looking out over Sydney Harbour and the Opera House still gave the hotel a special sense of place. However, the lounge felt overcrowded during both breakfast and evening service, which diminished the sense of luxury.

Evening canapés ran from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The drinks menu included complimentary alcoholic beverages served by the glass.

Wine options included Shiraz from Tyrrell’s Moore’s Creek in NSW, Cabernet Sauvignon from Howard Park Margaret River in WA, Pinot Noir from Cloud Street SA, Chardonnay Pinot Noir NV from Dunes & Greene SA, Chardonnay from Benchmark Barossa SA, Riesling from Dead Man Walking SA and Sauvignon Blanc from Drift Margaret River WA.

The lounge also offered a good choice of spirits, including Campari Bitter Aperitif, Jim Beam Bourbon, Jack Daniel Whiskey, Smirnoff Red Label Vodka, Tanqueray London Dry Gin, Havana Club Rum, Baileys Cream Liqueur, Black Bottle Brandy and Johnnie Walker Red Label Scotch Whisky.

Beer choices included Corona from Mexico, Crown Lager from NSW and James Boag’s Premium from Tasmania. Soft drinks included Coca-Cola, tonic water, Coke No Sugar, ginger ale, lemonade and soda water.

Horizon Club Lounge
Horizon Club Lounge Drinks Cabinets

On paper, the drinks choice felt decent for a hotel lounge. However, the busy atmosphere made the evening service feel less relaxing than expected. During evening cocktails, children were running freely around the lounge, and the overall feel became more like a busy canteen than a premium Horizon Club experience.

Food & Drink

We did not use the main hotel restaurants during this short visit. Most of our food and drink experience came from the Horizon Club Lounge.

The lounge offered breakfast and evening drinks, but the busy atmosphere reduced our enjoyment. Food and drink can feel much more enjoyable when the setting feels calm and well-managed. On this occasion, the crowding made the experience feel rushed and less premium.

The evening cocktail period should have felt like a relaxing part of the stay. Instead, the lounge felt too busy and lacked the luxury feel we remembered from our previous visit.

Breakfast also suffered because of the crowded setting. We prefer a lounge breakfast because it feels quieter than a main restaurant. During our stay, the lounge did not offer that calmer start to the day.

For a short one-night stay, the lounge food and drink mattered because we did not have time to explore the hotel’s wider restaurant options. A better lounge experience would have made the stay feel much more positive.

Food and drink, therefore, became another mixed part of our Shangri-La Sydney Return Visit Review.

Staff & Service

The staff we encountered were pleasant enough, but the overall service experience did not overcome the lounge’s issues.

A luxury hotel needs to manage busy spaces well, especially in a club lounge. The overcrowding, noise and lack of calm made the service feel less polished than expected.

We did not feel that the hotel matched the standard we remembered from 2019. Returning to a hotel after a brilliant previous stay can raise expectations, and unfortunately, our March 2025 visit did not live up to them.

Service can make a big difference when a hotel feels busy. Strong management, clear organisation and a calm atmosphere help guests relax even during peak periods. During our visit, the lounge experience needed more control.

The staff may have worked hard, but the overall environment reduced the sense of luxury. For us, the hotel needed to manage the lounge better to preserve the premium feel guests expect with Horizon Club access.

What We Liked

We still loved the location. The Rocks remains a great base for exploring Sydney, and the hotel offers easy access to Circular Quay, the harbour and nearby attractions.

The views also impressed us again. The outlook over Sydney Harbour and the Opera House looked spectacular, especially from the lounge.

The room felt clean and comfortable, and the bed gave us a decent night’s sleep before our onward flight to Singapore.

We also liked the convenience of staying somewhere familiar. Returning to a hotel we had enjoyed before should have made the stopover feel easy and reassuring.

These positives helped our Shangri-La Sydney Return Visit Review avoid a lower score, but they could not make up for the disappointing lounge experience.

What Could Be Better

The Horizon Club Lounge needs better crowd control during peak times. A premium lounge should feel calm, relaxed and more exclusive, especially during breakfast and evening cocktails.

The room also needed more character and a stronger sense of luxury. It was comfortable, but it did not feel memorable or particularly special.

Our return visit also showed how important consistency can be. We had a wonderful experience in 2019, but our March 2025 stay felt very different.

The hotel also needs to consider how the lounge atmosphere affects the overall guest experience. Guests who book club access often want a quieter and more refined environment. When the lounge feels overcrowded, the added value quickly disappears.

Overall Verdict

Our Shangri-La Sydney Return Visit Review ends on a mixed note. The hotel still has a fantastic location and incredible harbour views, but our return visit fell short of expectations.

We chose Shangri-La Sydney again because of our excellent 2019 stay. Unfortunately, the overcrowded lounge, canteen-like atmosphere and fairly standard room left us disappointed.

For a short one-night stop before flying to Singapore, the hotel worked from a practical point of view. However, it did not feel like the luxury return visit we had hoped for.

The views and location still deserve praise, and the hotel remains well placed for anyone wanting to explore The Rocks and Circular Quay. However, the premium parts of the stay did not deliver enough for us.

We rate Shangri-La Sydney ★★☆☆☆ 2 out of 5 stars.

Final Summary

Shangri-La Sydney still offers one of the best harbour-view locations in the city, but our March 2025 return visit did not match our wonderful 2019 stay.

The views and location remain excellent, but the overcrowded lounge and standard room experience made the stay feel disappointing. For us, this Shangri-La Sydney Return Visit Review reflects a hotel that still has huge potential, but did not deliver the premium experience we expected on our return.

We wanted to love Shangri-La Sydney again, but the stay felt very different from our first visit. A spectacular view can create a strong first impression, but a hotel also needs consistency, calm spaces and a premium guest experience. Sadly, our return visit fell short.
