Qantas First Class Lounge Sydney Review & Rating

Overall rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 out of 5
Expectation Level: Exceeded expectations as an airline lounge, but below the full “wow factor” we expected
Best For: British Airways Gold members, oneworld Emerald travellers, First Class passengers, premium dining and runway views
Not Ideal For: Travellers expecting ultra-luxury Champagne or a dramatic “wow” First Class lounge experience.

Our visit to the Qantas First Class Lounge in Sydney took place on 15th March 2025, before our British Airways Business Class flight from Sydney to Singapore. At the time, we had British Airways Gold status, which gave us access as oneworld Emerald travellers.

The Qantas First Class Lounge Sydney is located airside in Sydney International Terminal 1 and is open daily from 5 am to 10 pm, according to Qantas and Sydney Airport lounge information. Qantas also highlights lounge dining, bar service, barista coffee, business facilities, showers and spa facilities as part of the lounge experience.

We had heard so many positive comments about the Qantas First Class Lounge Sydney from other travellers and reviewers, so we arrived with very high expectations. In many ways, the lounge impressed us. It looked stylish, felt calm, offered proper dining and gave us excellent airport views. However, it did not quite deliver the full “wow factor” we expected from such a famous First Class lounge.

First Impressions

The entrance made the Qantas First Class Lounge Sydney feel more special than a standard airport lounge. After passing through the terminal, we reached the lounge entrance and headed upstairs by escalator. The living wall near the entrance gave the space a fresh, calm feel before the lounge opened into a bright and elegant upper-level area.

Inside, the lounge looked smart and polished. Marble floors, warm wood, curved architectural features and Qantas red accents created a premium feel. The design still stands out, and the large windows brought in plenty of natural light.

We immediately liked the sense of space. The lounge did not feel cramped during our visit, and the layout offered clear areas for dining, relaxing, working and watching aircraft on the apron.

Lounge Design and Atmosphere

The Qantas First Class Lounge Sydney has a distinctive design. The curved wooden frames, marble finishes and patterned carpet gave the lounge a strong visual identity. It felt more like a stylish hotel lounge than a typical airport waiting area.

We particularly liked the restaurant-style dining area. Tables came properly set with glassware, cutlery and napkins, which helped the lounge feel more premium. The dining area also felt calm and organised, and staff kept the tables tidy throughout our visit.

The seating areas offered a good mix of sofas, armchairs and window-facing seats. We enjoyed sitting near the windows with a glass of Champagne while watching aircraft at the gates. The apron views added a real sense of occasion before our flight to Singapore.

Some parts of the lounge felt slightly understated rather than spectacular. The lounge looked elegant, but not every area delivered the dramatic First Class “wow” we expected after reading so many glowing reviews. Even so, the overall atmosphere felt relaxed, premium and enjoyable.

Airport Views

The views stood out as one of the best features of the Qantas First Class Lounge Sydney. From the windows, we could see aircraft parked at the gates, including a Singapore Airlines aircraft, which felt fitting before our journey to Singapore.

The large windows also helped the lounge feel bright and open. Many airport lounges feel enclosed, but this lounge kept us connected to the airport without feeling noisy or rushed.

The departure board also added a lovely traditional airport touch. It gave the lounge personality and made it easy to keep an eye on flights without constantly checking a phone.

Food and Dining

Dining formed one of the strongest parts of our Qantas First Class Lounge Sydney review. The lounge offered an autumn menu with proper à la carte choices rather than a basic buffet.

The menu included lentil and kale soup, buffalo mozzarella salad, crispy spiced duck, salt and pepper squid, beef cheeseburger, pappardelle Bolognese, steamed snapper, slow-cooked lamb and beef brisket. Side options included chips, mixed leaves, rocket and parmesan salad, and steamed seasonal greens.

Club Sandwich with Chips

We chose the club sandwich with chips. The sandwich came neatly presented, well-toasted and generously filled. It worked perfectly as a pre-flight meal before a long journey. The chips tasted hot and crisp, and the plate felt far better than standard lounge food.

The food service gave the Qantas First Class Lounge Sydney a restaurant feel. We liked ordering from a menu, sitting at a properly set table and having time to enjoy the meal before boarding.

Dessert

For dessert, we tried the chocolate fudge cake with yoghurt ice cream. The menu listed it as one of the main dessert choices, and it looked attractive when served.

The cake tasted rich and smooth, while the yoghurt ice cream added a touch of freshness. It felt like a proper dessert rather than a small lounge sweet treat. We enjoyed it, and it rounded off the meal well.

The autumn menu also included seasonal fruit, signature pavlova, ginger cake with plums and a Pat and Stick’s ice cream selection. For a lounge, the dessert choice felt impressive.

Champagne and Drinks

The drink selection covered cocktails, cold drinks, white wine, rosé, red wine, dessert wine, beer, cider and Champagne. We enjoyed a glass of Champagne while looking out over the airport, which added to the pre-flight experience.

It tasted pleasant, but we expected a more premium pour given the reputation of the Qantas First Class Lounge Sydney. We had heard so many good things about the lounge that we expected the drinks selection to feel more special.

However, the Champagne felt a little disappointing for a First Class lounge. We checked the Champagne online while in the lounge and found Lallier retailing at around £32.36 plus delivery in the UK at that time, based on our quick search.

A Glass of Lallier Champagne

The Champagne did not spoil the visit, but it stopped the lounge from reaching a 5-star score for us. A stronger Champagne offering would have helped deliver more of the First Class “wow factor”.

The rest of the drinks menu looked strong. The cocktail list included several interesting options, and the lounge also offered still wine, beer, cider, soft drinks, tea and barista coffee.

Facilities

The Qantas First Class Lounge Sydney offered several useful facilities. Qantas lists internet access, wireless internet, a library, meeting rooms and a private suite among its business facilities, alongside showers and spa facilities.

We did not use the spa or showers during our visit, but their availability added to the premium feel. Travellers with longer layovers, early arrivals, or overnight connections would likely value those facilities more than we did on this visit.

The business area looked practical, with desks, chairs, a printer and a television. It would suit travellers who need to work before a flight.

The self-serve refreshment area also looked tidy and well-stocked, with coffee, tea, snacks, and glassware available.

Service

Service felt professional and relaxed. Staff kept the dining area clean, drinks arrived without fuss, and the lounge never felt chaotic during our visit.

We liked the calm pace. Nobody rushed us, and the experience felt smooth from start to finish. Staff struck a good balance between being available and giving passengers space to relax.

The service supported the premium feel of the Qantas First Class Lounge Sydney, especially during dining.

What We Liked

We liked the restaurant-style dining, the smart design, the airport views and the calm atmosphere. The club sandwich and chips tasted very good, and the chocolate fudge cake made a strong dessert choice.

The lounge also gave us a much better pre-flight experience than a standard Business Class lounge would have. Access through British Airways Gold status felt even more valuable because we travelled in BA Business Class rather than First Class.

What Could Improve

The Champagne offering could improve. Although enjoyable, it did not feel quite special enough for a First Class lounge.

We also expected a little more “wow factor”. The Qantas First Class Lounge Sydney has an excellent reputation, and that reputation raised our expectations. The lounge felt premium and impressive, but it did not completely amaze us.

A few areas also felt more understated than luxurious. Nothing felt poor, but the overall experience landed just below the very best First Class lounge experiences we have had.

Final Verdict

The Qantas First Class Lounge Sydney exceeded our expectations as an airline lounge, but it did not quite deliver the full “wow factor” we expected. We arrived with very high hopes after hearing so many positive reviews from other travellers and airline reviewers.

The lounge still impressed us. The design looked elegant, the à la carte dining worked very well, the à la carte dining worked very well, the apron views added real atmosphere, and the service felt polished and relaxed. It gave us a far better pre-flight experience than a standard Business Class lounge would have.

However, the Champagne felt slightly disappointing for a First Class offering. It tasted enjoyable, but we expected something more premium. That small disappointment, combined with the slightly understated feel in some areas, kept the lounge from reaching a perfect score.

Overall, we enjoyed our visit and would happily return. The Qantas First Class Lounge Sydney remains a very strong lounge and a genuine benefit for British Airways Gold and oneworld Emerald travellers flying from Sydney.
